Martin is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Pharmacy, Freie Universität Berlin and Chairman of the Drug Commission of German Pharmacists (AMK). In his main job, he is the Managing Director of the Department of Medicine of ABDA - Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists, Berlin (www.abda.de). In addition, he is Director Pharmacy of the German Institute for Drug Use Evaluation (www.dapi.de).

He graduated as a pharmacist from the University of Hamburg, Germany, in 1983. From 19831984, he was a hospital pharmacist, and studied Medicine at the University of Hamburg from 19841986. In 1988, he obtained his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Hamburg. In 1989, he was named "Expert in Pharmacology" by the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology. He specialized as a “Drug Information Pharmacist” in 1993. He was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Pharmacology, Goethe-University Frankfurt at Main in 2005.

Medication adherence; Benefit assessment (AMNOG); Medicines management; Medication safety; Pharmacoepidemiology; Pharmacy Practice Research/Translational Pharmacy; Drug information and drug supply and -usage are some of the areas he has expertise.

He has over 550 publications to his name. Martin has delivered over 500 lectures, presentations, and seminars all over the world and has written some books as well.

Martin is a member in various committees and commissions e.g., Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), Federal Ministry of Health (Committee Action Plan for Medication Safety), Board of Trustees of the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG), Advisory Board Statutory Health Insurance Drug Index (GKV-AI).

He is a founding member of the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (1994), served PCNE as chairman 19992001, and is Honorary Member since 2017. Martin served on the General Committee (Board) of the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP) from 2006 to 2012. In 2020, he received the André Bédat Award, the highest pharmaceutical practice award internationally.
